Sean's Team Building and Team Leadership Blog Shares Insights and Inspiration to Lead from Where You Are!
The 15 Best Free Team Leadership Podcasts
Everyone could benefit from a daily dose of the best team leadership that podcasts offer.
Despite the growing number of great free shows and the incredible amount of inspiration and information they offer, I would imagine that the audience for audio podcasts is still incredibly small, though.
That said, if you have tired of top 40 music and sports talk radio and would like to motivate yourself with a varied collection of interesting ideas, experiment for a few days with using your drive time as an opportunity to expand on your education.
If you have not yet discovered podcasts on iTunes yet, I encourage you to begin your drive time university course curriculum with the following list.
I have shared below the 15 best free team leadership podcasts, in my humble opinion…
15 – GRANTLAND SPORTS
Okay, so if you aren’t listening to sports talk, you still need your fix, right? This is a diverse collection of podcasts from Grantland writers and “friends of the site” that is consistently funny and informative.
14 – THE HBR IDEACAST
Published by the Harvard Business Review, this weekly podcast features helpful ideas and commentary from some of the best known thinkers in business. Including information and interviews about both business theory and best practices. Good material for managers.
13 – THE NUTRITION DIVAS QUICK AND DIRTY TIPS FOR EATING WELL
We all eat and go to restaurants. And we all need to be more healthy in our choices and behaviors… so this podcast by Monica Reinagel shares well-researched, useful and easy ways to upgrade your eating habits and feel great.
12 – LIFEHACKER
Stay informed about current trends in technology and useful tips to make your life easier. Informal in style, each episode will give you at least one surprising nugget or idea to use.
11 – MAN SCHOOL WITH CALEB BACON
This podcast is a lighthearted and fun collection of interviews, experiences, and explanations of how to be a better man. Witty and unpredictable, even women will benefit from the messages!
10 – THE PARTIALLY EXAMINED LIFE PHILOSOPHY PODCAST
Hosted by three former philosophy graduate students, this podcast runs longer than most (averaging over an hour for each episode) but it delivers a great deal of entertaining ideas and questions for you to consider and apply in plain English.
9 – TED TALKS (IDEAS WORTH SPREADING)
So, yeah – everybody has already heard of TED talks, and you have likely seen a number of amazing YouTube videos – but these leading thinkers and speakers from around the world deliver tremendous content to make your commute more intriguing.
8 – COMMON SENSE WITH DAN CARLIN
An “independent look at politics and current events,” this podcast explores topics that your team will be talking about and offers both a historical perspective and interesting commentary.
7 – THE MOTH PODCAST
This is a compelling and often riveting set of personal stories, told live and without notes. Began in 1997, it illustrates that we all have impactful stories to share and have all experienced challenges and moments of laugh out loud humor. Hear one and you will be hooked.
6 – THE NERDIST
Every team leader needs to have a good sense of humor, and Chris Hardwick provides smart and (explicit) funny material and guests that will definitely bring a smile to your face.
5 – TIMOTHY KELLER PODCAST
From Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York, Keller delivers sermons with thought-provoking messages that will both inspire and engage you. Every effective leader has a spiritual side, and I have found Keller to be must-hear
4 – RADIOLB FROM WNYC
This is where “science meets culture,” and each episode investigates a Big Idea. It provides exceptional conversations that you will get drawn into and not want to end. A unique presentation of scientific information made accessible and addictive.
3 – STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW
This podcast is provided by the people at www.howstuffworks.com, and offers a terrific and diverse spectrum of topics to keep you full of useful trivia and innovative ideas.
2 – THIS AMERICAN LIFE

1 – THE ENTRELEADERSHIP PODCAST
Number one for a reason. Dave Ramsey’s material is terrific, and Chris Hogan, who hosts the show, is great conversing with well-known guests and with sharing key points that you can immediately implement into building a stronger team culture.
If you disagree with any of these, or would add one that you feel has been overlooked but could be a valuable addition to the list, please let me know...
Again, this list of 15 team leadership podcasts is intended to be just a starting point.
Let the programs above serve as your core curriculum, then expand by trying other electives and focus on your own individual degree program… but do use the time that is now wasted as you drive to and from work, or cut the grass, or sit by the pool, or wait on a plane, as an opportunity to better yourself.
Business team building begins with relationships, and relationships begin with conversations – conversations that you will be more prepared for by listening to this diverse collection of programming.
Remember, the surest way to improve your team is to grow yourself!
